About Ipswich Regent Theatre

Since its opening in 1929, the Regent Theatre in Ipswich has also known under two other names - the Gaumont and, for one year only, the Odeon. The theatre holds just over 1,700 people making it East Anglia's largest theatre. It is currently run by Ipswich Borough Council, who took it on following controversy over its future in 1989.

On the day of performance Front of House staff will be available to assist you to your seats and answer any last minute questions.

A Duty Manager will also be available and may be contacted via the Box Office.

For the benefit of your fellow theatregoers please turn off all pagers, mobile phones and similar devices during the performance.

Bars are open one hour before the start of the production until the end of the last interval.

Drinks are not normally permitted in the auditorium for concerts or shows, with the exception of the boxes at the Regent Theatre.

An interval drinks ordering service is available for most productions.

Light confectionery and ice creams are usually available to customers 1 hour prior to the performance, and during any interval.

The use of recording equipment of any description is strictly prohibited in the theatre.

Some show promoters and/or artists may require customers to hand cameras, mobile phones and/or recording equipment in at the door for safe keeping during the show.

Show related merchandise is available for most nationally touring shows.

Ipswich Entertainments cannot be held responsible for any item of show merchandise purchased at the theatre directly from the touring company / production.

The Regent Theatre is a non-smoking venue.

Please note that some shows many contain strobe lighting, smoke effects and/or other special effects.

Details of special effects to be used will be posted in the foyer prior to the show and further details will be available from the Duty Manager.

For some concerts, particularly rock and pop events, customers choose to stand.

In most cases the artists encourage this. In the interest of public safety we require customers to remain within their seated area and that gangways and passageways are kept clear at all times.

Ipswich Arts & Entertainments venues operate in accordance with its Public Entertainment Licence and its Theatre Licence which states that:

  • All gangways, passages and staircases shall be kept entirely free from chairs or any other obstruction and no person shall be allowed to sit or stand during any performance or entertainment in such gangways, passages or staircases unless permission has been granted by the Licensing Authority.
  • The public shall be permitted to leave by all exits and entrance doors after each performance or entertainment, except those marked "Emergency Exit".
  • Smoking shall not be permitted to take place in the auditorium or balcony or on the stage except as part of the performance or entertainment.
