Venue History and Information
Venue History
Proposals to build a 'Town Hall' existed in 1878 and after 51 years of discussion the construction work began in 1929. In 1934 the decision to build the Guildhall was made and work was started taking nearly three years to complete due to the scarcity of material and labour as a result of WWII.
In 1937 a brand new state-of-the-art Guildhall, built in classical style of the 1930s, was opened by the 17th Earl of Derby and is today part of a Grade 2* listed building. Incorporated into the building of the Guildhall was the John Compton Dual Console Pipe Organ unique instrument taking two years to build and is probably worth around £1 million.
The organ survived WWII without a scratch even when an unexploded bomb landed right in the centre of the hall. It is still in working order and played at Civil and graduation ceremonies.
The Guildhall's resident Bert Osborne Band, in true theatrical tradition, insisted that the show must go on and played regularly throughout the war years and after; great artists including Paul Robson, Beniamino Gigli graced the stage along with many others, musicians, pop stars, comedians, jazz and military bands and so on.
In the seventies a different sound arrived at the Guildhall - Rock Bands bringing Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie. In the early eighties the Guidhall attracted artistes from America, Gloria Gaynor, Victor Borge, and live broadcasting with the BBC Antiques Roadshow.
In 1989 the good news came that the Guildhall was to be refurbished, enhancing its facilities to meet the challenges of entertainment needs, taking it into the 21st century. Southampton Guildhall is now the South's largest multipurpose entertainment venue combining Comedy, Classical Orchestras, Family Entertainment and Rock/Pop.
The most popular events still remain in Rock & Pop, with sell out shows from some of the biggest names through the nineties Blur, Oasis, The Charlatans, and Prodigy, and into the 21st century with today's top bands - Southampton-born Craig David, Toploader, Faithless, Suede, Daniel Bedingfield and Sugababes.

Technical Recruitment
Due to the sheer volume of enquiries, and our current lack of resources, the technical department are sadly unable to offer any kind of work experience or voluntary placements at the moment.
Vacancies do however occasionally arise for casual technicians. We don’t normally advertise when we are looking to recruit, but instead keep a file of application forms from interested individuals. Due to the nature of casual employment, it is difficult for us to say when we might need to recruit, and due to some basic training being required before commencement of work, for financial reasons we tend to wait until we have multiple vacancies.
If you would be interested in applying for a casual technician post next time we recruit, please have a look at the job description and person specification below, and if you feel you meet the criteria, please return a completed application form either by fax 023 8083 2009, or by post to Simon Williams, Southampton Guildhall, West Marlands Road, Southampton, SO14 7LP.
Please note it is Live Nations policy to keep application forms on file for four months, after which they are confidentially destroyed.
Thank-you for your interest in the department.

Technical Introduction
All your requirements should be discussed well in advance with the department, so we may best advise you on how to make your event the best it can be, and ensure it meets your budget!
The department is technically responsible for all lighting, sound, a/v, crew, health and safety and production management of three main areas within the complex: the Guildhall, the Solent Suite and the Lecture Theatre - whether serviced directly, or overseeing external companies.
The Lecture Theatre is a 118-seat venue used mostly for meetings and basic lectures. The venue has basic sound, lighting and audio-visual equipment available.
The Solent Suite is a 250 capacity room, which is often also used as an over-spill area for the Guildhall, so on larger events, additional lighting, sound and draping may be brought in. Discos, meetings, exhibitions, trade fairs and small dinner dances are also catered for.
The Guildhall is the main venue where most of the department’s energies are focused. The venue’s main feature is its flexibility, although there is a fixed balcony within the back wall, the main auditorium is flat. Its current maximum standing capacity is 1749, so it puts us on the 2000 capacity touring circuit for Rock and Roll tours - of which we typically do about 30-50 a year. From flat floor, we can go to a fully seated auditorium, with a maximum capacity of 1290. Between the two, we can cover everything from an organ concert, to a seated dinner, student ball, fashion show, dance event, conference or exhibition.
Technically, the venue has a basic infrastructure, predominantly orientated towards touring techniques. The FOH house sound system is capable of covering the entire auditorium, to a very reasonable lever, and is easily complemented with additional boxes for larger shows. Lighting is reasonable with onstage illumination coming from either a grid of open white cyc units for basic events, or a front and back pre-rig truss of Par's and specials. We can supplement all our systems by hiring additional equipment if the client has the budget.
As there is no fly tower, and wing space is minimal, we do not have suitable production facilities for full-scale theatre productions, and as such we do not fabricate staging, costumes or scenery etc.
The department strives to service every event individually; themed events are a speciality, with specific equipment hired in to complement some of the larger events, to the client’s requirements. We also aim to service all private events through the department, and feel we can offer the best service to our clients, with our knowledge of the venue and its capabilities.
The Technical Department covers a very mixed programme of events, from school speech days, to large student balls with flown lighting, sound and themeing. Working with clients that are new to running events, clients that have been using the venue annually for many years, through to touring professionals, promoters and self-contained productions.
