Manchester Apollo

The Manchester Apollo is one of the premier concert venues in England, with shows from every major rock, pop and comedy act on the touring circuit. The breadth of styles of events covers every market - the cutting edge of modern British music, through some of the biggest artists from overseas, popular comedy, and music for older generations. With both fully seated and part-standing formats, this versatile venue increases its footfall and presentations year on year. Art Deco in style, the Grade II listed building has been central to the British touring circuit for decades, attracting Best Venue nominations and patrons from across the globe.

The Manchester Apollo is situated on the A6, Stockport Road (at the roundabout with Hyde Road, A57), approximately 3/4 mile South of Piccadilly Railway / Metrolink Station.

A frequent bus service, 192, is available from outside Piccadilly Railway / Metrolink Station to the theatre. Journey time is approximately 3 minutes. Taxi fare from Piccadilly Railway / Metrolink Station is approximately £3.00.

There are two official car parks immediately adjacent to the theatre, priced at £3.00. These are supervised from 6.00pm until the end of the event. In the event that these car parks reach capacity, patrons will be directed to alternative car parking. Patrons are strongly advised not to park in unofficial car parks.

There is a taxi office opposite the theatre.
The Manchester Apollo was originally built as an ABC Cinema Ardwick in 1930. It was designed by architects Peter Cummings, Alex Irvine and R Gillespie Williams. It's original purpose was as a cinema and variety hall. It was opened by famous 1930s actress Margaret Lockwood.

Right up until the 1970s the venue continued to provide the same service to the public until the cinema industry declined and the variety side of the venue took over. It focused it's resources on becoming a leading concert venue competing at that time with the likes of Maine Road.

In 1995 a unique seating scheme was introduced to allow the venue to take out and put back all the chairs on a regular basis. The Apollo now has the flexibility to increase it's capacity with a part standing, part seated show.

The venue has seen it's fair share of famous faces over the years; people like The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen and Bob Dylan have all played at the Manchester Apollo. The venue has a tradition of bringing some of the biggest artistes of the day - such as the Manic Street Preachers, Oasis and Prince - to an intimate venue; as well as bringing through developing acts such as Linkin Park, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lambchop and Angie Stone.

Always diverse, the Apollo also caters for comedy shows, be they stand-up (Peter Kay, Billy Connolly, Roy 'Chubby' Brown), or productions (League of Gentlemen, French & Saunders, Bottom, The Fast Show).
